Forget Konaté: Arne Slot Must Drop ‘Absolutely Lost’ Liverpool Star After Palace Defeat
Liverpool supporters took to social media to vent their frustration with Alexis Mac Allister after the Premier League clash with Crystal Palace.
The reigning champions had arrived at Selhurst Park boasting a flawless start to the season, having won all five of their opening league games despite not always looking convincing. Palace, meanwhile, were on a 17-match unbeaten streak in all competitions, including a Community Shield victory over the Reds.
Liverpool looked to have salvaged a point late on when substitute Federico Chiesa struck in the 87th minute, but Eddie Nketiah netted a dramatic 97th-minute winner to hand the Reds their first league defeat of the campaign. Throughout the closing stages and after the final whistle, much of the post-match chatter among fans centred on Mac Allister’s display.
‘Mac Allister Looks Absolutely Lost’
On X (formerly Twitter), many supporters criticised the Argentine’s performance. Signed from Brighton for £35 million in 2023, Mac Allister has often been a standout performer for Liverpool, but he struggled badly in South London, continuing what has been an inconsistent start to the season.
One fan claimed the midfielder has looked “absolutely lost” since the departures of Luis Díaz and Darwin Núñez, while another said they would pick Palace’s Adam Wharton “any day of the week” ahead of him. Other comments included:
“I don’t know if it’s just a lack of fitness, but Mac Allister has to be dropped now. He hasn’t played well all season.”
“[Conor] Bradley and Mac Allister constantly starting when they’ve been nothing but horrifying is on [Arne] Slot, sorry. [Curtis] Jones and [Jeremie] Frimpong are right there.”
Defender Ibrahima Konaté also came under fire, but the focus remained largely on Mac Allister. Despite his proven quality and past standout performances, the 26-year-old was clearly off the pace at Selhurst Park.
Struggling to Impress
Mac Allister lasted just over an hour before being replaced by Curtis Jones in the 65th minute. He failed to register a single shot, won all of his aerial duels but lost both ground battles, and surrendered possession seven times, according to SofaScore.
With Dominik Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch both excelling and capable of playing in the same role, there is growing debate over whether Mac Allister should keep his place. Given Liverpool’s depth, the manager may soon be tempted to make a change if the Argentine cannot rediscover his best form.
