Liverpool have no plans to sell their “top-quality” star in January, even though he hasn’t made a single Premier League start this season.
One Liverpool star who seemed destined to leave in the summer has now completely turned things around and earned the backing of the Anfield hierarchy.
After a frustrating debut season in which he featured just 14 times, Federico Chiesa was strongly linked with a move back to Italy, with several Serie A clubs showing interest. For a while, it looked like the 27-year-old forward’s return home was only a matter of time.
However, despite not starting a single Premier League match this season, Chiesa has been used more regularly, making six appearances so far and coming off the bench to score against Bournemouth and Crystal Palace (Transfermarkt).
Chiesa to stay at Liverpool beyond January
According to Football Insider, the Italy international is expected to remain at Liverpool, with a January departure now ruled out. Initially tipped to leave in the winter window, Chiesa has impressed with his cameos and earned the confidence of Arne Slot, who added him to Liverpool’s Champions League squad following Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury.
Should Chiesa be getting more minutes?
Although he’s yet to secure a starting role, Chiesa remains a fan favourite and ranks among Liverpool’s top performers for goal contributions this season—behind only Hugo Ekitike and Mohamed Salah (Transfermarkt).
He’s made a real impact with limited minutes, with ITV commentator Seb Hutchinson calling him a “top-level talent.” Danny Murphy has also urged Slot to start him over the “underwhelming” Cody Gakpo, pointing out that both players have identical stats for goals and assists, though Chiesa achieved his numbers in just 20% of Gakpo’s playing time.
While Slot still seems hesitant to start him in the Premier League or Champions League, Chiesa’s consistent impact from the bench could soon make his inclusion unavoidable.
What’s clear now is that his Liverpool future is no longer in question. While others may depart in January, the Italian forward looks certain to stay at Anfield for the rest of the season—and perhaps beyond.
