Tottenham Fans Could Turn on Frank if He Continues to Select the ‘Confusing’ Pair Following Defeat to Aston Villa
Tottenham fans could begin to lose faith in Thomas Frank if he continues to persist with the same underperforming midfield partnership following Sunday’s 2-1 home defeat to Aston Villa. The loss not only dented Spurs’ hopes of keeping pace with Premier League leaders Arsenal but also intensified scrutiny on Frank’s tactical choices and his preferred midfield setup.
Tottenham entered the match five points behind Arsenal and knew that victory would move them within two points of their north London rivals and above Manchester City. The start was promising, with Rodrigo Bentancur firing the hosts into an early lead just five minutes in. However, Spurs failed to build on that advantage. Aston Villa responded through a superb strike from Morgan Rogers to level the game, and later in the second half, Emiliano Buendia’s curling finish beat Guglielmo Vicario to seal all three points for Unai Emery’s side.
In the aftermath of the defeat, much of the focus has fallen on Frank’s decision to stick with his trusted but heavily criticised midfield duo of Rodrigo Bentancur and Joao Palhinha. The pair have started together in several recent matches, offering defensive solidity but little creativity or attacking drive. While they did link up neatly for Tottenham’s opening goal, their influence quickly waned as the game went on, and Spurs struggled to maintain control or sustain pressure on Villa’s back line.
Bentancur, despite finding the net, made minimal attacking impact beyond that moment, managing only one key pass and recording a very low expected assist figure. Palhinha, meanwhile, played his usual role as a ball-winner but offered next to nothing in advancing play, often slowing down transitions and leaving Tottenham’s attacking players isolated. With forwards like Mohammed Kudus, Xavi Simons, and Wilson Odobert starved of service, Spurs’ attack looked blunt and predictable.
Supporters have grown increasingly frustrated with what they see as Frank’s stubborn loyalty to the same cautious setup. Following the defeat, social media was filled with angry reactions from fans calling the Bentancur–Palhinha partnership “baffling” and “self-sabotaging.” One supporter wrote, “The insistence on Palhinha-Bentancur is utterly baffling. We’re driving with the handbrake on.” Another vented, “Another week of Bentancur-Palhinha is a sackable offence.” Others squarely placed the blame on Frank himself, accusing him of being too slow to make changes and too hesitant to take risks.
The frustration stems from the sense that Tottenham are playing within themselves, unable to find rhythm or attacking fluency due to an overly defensive midfield. Many fans believe that Frank’s conservative selections are costing valuable points and dampening the team’s momentum after what had been a promising start to the season.
As the pressure mounts, the Tottenham manager faces a critical decision. The current setup may offer defensive protection, but it lacks the dynamism and creativity needed to compete with the league’s top sides. With a growing list of talented midfielders waiting in the wings, including Pape Matar Sarr, Archie Gray, and Lucas Bergvall, Frank will need to rethink his approach to avoid further setbacks and restore belief among supporters who are beginning to question his judgement.
Unless there is a clear shift in strategy, patience among Spurs fans could soon run thin, and continued reliance on the same “baffling” duo may only deepen the discontent surrounding Frank’s management.
