Arne Slot may need to make a big decision after Liverpool’s 2-1 defeat to Manchester United at Anfield — a result that extended their losing streak to four matches. If the Reds are to rediscover their rhythm, something has to change.
The game couldn’t have started worse for Liverpool, as Bryan Mbeumo broke free behind Virgil van Dijk to fire past Giorgi Mamardashvili inside the opening minute. Despite Cody Gakpo hitting the post and Senne Lammens denying Alexander Isak, the hosts failed to capitalise on their chances.
Gakpo did manage to level things in the second half, but Harry Maguire’s header quickly restored United’s lead. The result leaves Slot facing serious questions about his team’s defensive setup.

While several Liverpool players underperformed, Milos Kerkez’s display was particularly concerning. Signed in the summer for £40 million from Bournemouth to succeed Andrew Robertson at left-back, the Hungarian looked far from convincing — and Slot may now be tempted to bring the experienced Scot back into the starting XI.
From the outset, United repeatedly targeted Liverpool’s left flank, with Amad Diallo and Mbeumo exploiting the gaps between Kerkez and Van Dijk. BBC Sport’s Stephen Warnock even questioned the defensive understanding between the pair.
Kerkez not only looked shaky defensively but also offered little going forward. His early foul throw summed up a frustrating performance in which he lacked composure and attacking intent. Once a key attacking outlet under Robertson, Liverpool’s left side now looked static and uncertain.
Fans didn’t hold back after the game, with many taking to social media to vent their frustration. “Kerkez is so poor, so poor,” wrote one supporter. Others went even further: “Kerkez is a dud,” said one post, while another added, “Kerkez is our weakest player — no brain, no speed, no defence.”
Some supporters see Kerkez’s form as part of a broader issue. “No cohesion whatsoever. Kerkez is frustrating me so much,” wrote one, while another criticised several players at once: “Kerkez, Isak, Van Dijk, Konate, and Salah all look abysmal.”
Many called for Robertson’s return: “Andy Robertson has to come on now… Kerkez is absolutely shocking,” said one fan, while another added, “Kerkez looks so out of his depth I’d rather have Robbo start — even if his legs are gone.”
Although there’s uncertainty over whether Robertson can still handle a full 90 minutes, it’s clear that persisting with an out-of-form Kerkez is doing more harm than good. For the sake of both the player’s confidence and Liverpool’s form, Slot may need to take him out of the firing line before things get worse.
