Thomas Frank has hit back at criticism of his Tottenham tenure by arguing that the club’s struggles long predate his arrival.
Spurs currently sit 11th in the Premier League standings, having collected 22 points from 16 matches, and their form has dipped sharply over the past two months. With performances and results continuing to slide, reports suggest the club is already considering contingency plans should Frank be unable to halt the decline.
The Dane has asked the Tottenham hierarchy for patience, acknowledging that the problems facing the club cannot be solved overnight. He has now gone further, insisting that the issues he is dealing with are nothing new.
Thomas Frank highlights Tottenham’s recent history
Frank has stressed that his ambition is to turn Spurs into consistent title challengers, but conceded that the club remains some distance from that level. He pointed to Tottenham’s Premier League record over the last four seasons as evidence of a deeper, structural problem.
Speaking via The Guardian, the 52-year-old said:
“What is the potential of Tottenham? I want to win trophies. We want to compete with the best teams in the country and hopefully win the league one day.
That’s the dream of every Spurs fan — and it’s my dream too. But the question is: how do we get there?
“The reality is this: we finished eighth in 2022–23 while playing in the Champions League, then fifth with no European football, then 17th while competing in the Europa League. This is now the fourth season, with a lot of player turnover along the way.
That’s the reality of where we are.”
Fans growing uneasy about direction
Tottenham supporters are not only alarmed by the results, but also by the lack of attacking ambition and identity on the pitch. Spurs have posted some of the poorest expected goals (xG) figures in the league this season, with little sign of consistent chance creation.
While Frank is justified in highlighting the difficult situation he inherited, many fans are still waiting for clear evidence of progress. So far this campaign, those signs of a team moving in the right direction have been hard to find.
