“Don’t count Liverpool out” – Credible reporter suggests Reds may swoop for £65m ace

One well-connected journalist believes Liverpool shouldn’t yet be discounted from making a sensational January move in the transfer market.

Last week, The Athletic reported that Antoine Semenyo would prefer a switch to Manchester City, though Fabrizio Romano later suggested that Liverpool haven’t abandoned hope of landing the Bournemouth winger.

Although a January exit from the Vitality Stadium now looks increasingly realistic for the 25-year-old, where he ends up remains far from settled.

Steele keeps door open on Liverpool move

In his January transfer preview for Mail Sport, Lewis Steele hinted that Liverpool could still muscle their way into the race for the Ghana international, despite City being widely tipped as favourites.

Steele wrote that while much of the recent noise points towards a move to the Etihad, sources say Liverpool remain interested and could attempt to swoop in late. He stressed that the situation isn’t as straightforward as it’s being portrayed.

He added that earlier in the summer, Semenyo — valued by Bournemouth at around £65m, or closer to £75m without a release clause — had been mentioned as a Liverpool target. Steele speculated that former Bournemouth executive Richard Hughes may have been reluctant to take two players from his old club in one window after already signing Milos Kerkez.

Steele also warned against ruling out a Liverpool bid if the player and his representatives show encouragement, noting that Manchester City aren’t the only admirers, with Manchester United and Tottenham also monitoring developments.

Liverpool’s history of late January swoops

Liverpool supporters may be unsure how seriously to take the speculation, particularly as Steele’s claims clash with Ben Jacobs’ assertion that the club has no intention of pursuing Semenyo this winter.

City still appear best placed to secure his signature, but Liverpool have a track record of surprising January deals, as seen with the signings of Cody Gakpo and Luis Díaz in recent seasons.

Because of that, it would be premature to dismiss the possibility of a late Liverpool push, especially if sporting director Hughes believes a move to Anfield is achievable.

Semenyo has also rediscovered his scoring touch after a quiet spell, netting in three consecutive matches despite Bournemouth’s recent slide down the table.

While Arne Slot is unlikely to publicly acknowledge a need for January reinforcements, it wouldn’t be surprising if he’s privately eager for additions to bolster a thin squad.

With interest mounting and speculation swirling, Semenyo’s future looks set to dominate the headlines in the weeks ahead.
