Liverpool have been dealt a setback, with a Real Madrid star having no desire to make a move to the Merseyside club.
France international Eduardo Camavinga has reportedly signalled that his short-term future remains with Real Madrid, bringing an end to Liverpool’s hopes of a January move, according to TEAMtalk.
The 23-year-old has been on Liverpool’s radar for some time, with speculation suggesting the Reds could test the waters during the winter transfer window. However, any such plans have now been shelved.
Camavinga is said to be happy in the Spanish capital and has no desire to leave midway through the season. Although Liverpool continue to maintain contact with his representatives, they have been told a winter switch is off the table.
No January deal on the cards
As a result, any genuine pursuit would have to be postponed until the summer at the earliest, and even then Liverpool face an uphill task.
From Real Madrid’s standpoint, Camavinga is viewed as central to both their current setup and long-term vision. His adaptability has made him a vital asset, with the Frenchman able to fill roles in central midfield, as a holding player, or even at left-back when needed.
Madrid have no intention of selling, and with Camavinga tied to a contract running until 2029, the Spanish giants hold a strong hand in any negotiations.
Liverpool’s ongoing interest stems from a desire to rejuvenate and stabilise their midfield. Arne Slot is eager to further reshape the squad following a challenging campaign marked by inconsistency, underperforming new arrivals and signs of decline among some senior players.
Injuries have only deepened those issues, particularly the long-term absence of Alexander Isak, while off-field matters involving Mohamed Salah have added to the uncertainty.
Midfield remains a priority
Slot sees midfield as an area needing urgent reinforcement, and Camavinga’s energy, versatility and press resistance align perfectly with Liverpool’s recruitment profile.
That said, even if the player’s stance were to change in the future, Madrid’s asking price would be substantial. Any talks would likely start well beyond the £80 million mark, reflecting Camavinga’s age, importance and length of contract.
Liverpool have now accepted that a January move is not possible and are expected to turn their attention to more attainable options as they aim to restore stability and momentum.
