Spurs had already been dealt a blow before the January window opened when their preferred wide target, Antoine Semenyo, turned them down, opting instead for a move to Manchester City. Any hope that Semenyo’s likely switch to the Etihad might clear a path for Savinho or Omar Marmoush to arrive in north London has also faded, with early signs suggesting Tottenham are unlikely to land either player.
That leaves RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande emerging as Tottenham’s primary option out wide. However, the highly rated youngster reportedly carries a €100 million valuation — an opening figure designed to deter suitors, but one Leipzig can afford to demand given Diomande’s potential, his goal threat from the wing, and the club’s strong negotiating position.
Even before recent developments, Spurs were already facing an uphill task. They were competing with Manchester United, who beat them to Bryan Mbeumo last summer, and expectations of winning the race for Diomande were low.
Now, the challenge has intensified. According to Daily Mail journalist Simon Jones, Bayern Munich and Liverpool have joined Tottenham and Manchester United in tracking Diomande. Interest from two Champions League heavyweights immediately shifts the balance, pushing Spurs further down the pecking order.
While Tottenham could offer a clearer route to regular minutes on the left flank, recent performances — including a flat 0-0 draw against Brentford — do little to strengthen their pitch. Bayern boast a strong pull within the Bundesliga and may view Diomande as a long-term successor to Luis Díaz, while Liverpool are also searching for a natural left winger to eventually replace the same player.
As a result, Tottenham’s pursuit of a top-class wide attacker has become even more daunting.
