Fabrizio Romano delivers lunchtime transfer update as official talks begin over Liverpool legend
Fabrizio Romano has revealed that formal contact has been made over a possible January move involving a Liverpool player.
Federico Chiesa has once again struggled for consistent minutes at Anfield this season, and back in November Romano suggested that Serie A sides could look to tempt the winger back to Italy if his lack of starts under Arne Slot continued. With the situation unchanged, a new update from the transfer specialist suggests those earlier hints may have been well-timed.
Romano provides fresh update on Chiesa’s future
Just after lunchtime on Monday, Romano shared news regarding Liverpool’s No.14, with one of his former clubs exploring the possibility of a reunion. Posting on X, the journalist explained that Juventus have made an official approach to register their interest in Chiesa ahead of a potential January return.
Romano added that Juve are keen to strengthen their wide options this month, view Chiesa favourably, and that any move would depend on both Liverpool and the player, stressing that discussions remain at an early stage.
Liverpool should resist a January exit
Despite Chiesa’s popularity among supporters, that affection hasn’t translated into regular opportunities under Slot. The Italy international has been handed just two Premier League starts across a season and a half, underlining his peripheral role.
What’s notable is that even with Liverpool’s attacking resources stretched — due to injuries to Alexander Isak and Hugo Ekitike, along with Mohamed Salah’s absence at AFCON — the head coach has still largely overlooked Chiesa, aside from a rare start against Wolves shortly after Christmas.
While the winger failed to make an impact in that match, Liverpool are in no position to weaken their squad further this month. With forward options already limited, allowing Chiesa to leave mid-season without securing a replacement would be a risky move.
A departure in 2026 feels far more realistic, and Chiesa would be justified in seeking a club where he can play more regularly. For now, though, Liverpool will be hoping to keep him at Anfield until at least the summer.
