Liverpool edge closer to securing highly rated centre-back in major transfer boost
Liverpool are said to be closing in on the signing of highly rated Senegalese defender Mor Ndiaye, following new reports from Merseyside.
Liverpool Echo journalist Paul Gorst claims the Reds are making strong progress in their pursuit of the left-footed centre-back, who impressed talent spotters with a series of commanding displays for Senegal at the recent Under-17 World Cup in Qatar.
The proposed move is believed to be nearing completion, although Ndiaye is not expected to step straight into Arne Slot’s senior squad. Instead, the teenage defender would initially continue his development with Rob Page’s U21 side. Should the deal be finalised, it could pave the way for a loan exit for fellow young defender Amara Nallo.
Posting on X, Gorst wrote that Liverpool are edging closer to securing Ndiaye’s signature, adding that the youngster is likely to be placed in the U21 setup, while Nallo may be sent out on loan if the transfer goes through.
Who is Mor Ndiaye?
Ndiaye is widely viewed as one of the most exciting defensive talents to emerge from Senegal in recent years. Operating as a left-sided centre-back, he offers a blend of physical power and comfort in possession — qualities increasingly valued at the top level.
His stock rose sharply during the U17 World Cup, where he stood out thanks to his dominance in the air, strong positional awareness, and calmness when playing out from the back. Liverpool’s interest appears to align with a broader long-term plan to strengthen their defensive pipeline, having already agreed a deal for 17-year-old Ifeanyi Ndukwe.
Liverpool face competition for Marc Guéhi
While Ndiaye’s arrival would represent a promising investment for the future, Liverpool’s hopes of adding an established centre-back could face complications.
The Reds remain keen admirers of Crystal Palace skipper Marc Guéhi, but competition for his signature is intensifying. Manchester City are reportedly considering a move amid defensive concerns, with injuries to Rúben Dias and Joško Gvardiol potentially prompting Pep Guardiola to act.
City’s interest could threaten to derail Liverpool’s long-standing pursuit of the England international, turning Guéhi into a difficult target to secure.
