“Fantastic” midfielder officially confirmed to be returning to Liverpool following formal announcement
A Liverpool player who had been sent out on loan has now officially made his way back to Merseyside after his temporary spell away from Anfield came to an early end.
James Balagizi linked up with National League side Forest Green Rovers on a season-long loan last August, but his time in Gloucestershire was disrupted by a hamstring injury, restricting the midfielder to just 10 appearances under Robbie Savage.
According to The Athletic, the 22-year-old had recently been completing his rehabilitation back at Liverpool, with his final outing for Forest Green coming in an FA Cup defeat to Luton Town on Halloween.
Forest Green confirm Balagizi’s return
On Tuesday afternoon, Forest Green formally announced that Balagizi has returned to Liverpool following the termination of his loan agreement.
A statement posted on the club’s official website and social media read:
“We can confirm James Balagizi has returned to Liverpool. The 22-year-old made 10 appearances for Rovers, scoring a dramatic last-minute equaliser against Scunthorpe United earlier in the season.
“We would all like to thank James for his contributions this season, and we wish him every success for the rest of his career.”
What lies ahead for Balagizi?
Balagizi had shown real promise in his youth, producing eye-catching displays in Liverpool’s academy and during a loan spell at Crawley Town in 2022, where then-manager Kevin Betsy predicted he would go on to enjoy a “fantastic career” (Liverpool Echo).
However, this latest recall marks the third time one of his season-long loan moves has been cut short in January. Now 22, the midfielder is at a stage where consistency and stability are likely crucial to his development.
The contract he signed with Liverpool in the summer of 2023 has just six months left to run, and with no senior competitive appearances for the Reds — despite being named on the bench twice in domestic cup competitions during the 2021/22 season — a summer departure on a free transfer appears increasingly likely.
There is still a chance Balagizi could secure another short-term loan for the remainder of the campaign. A successful spell could pave the way for a permanent move elsewhere, but for now his immediate future remains uncertain.
The priority will be making a full recovery from the hamstring injury that prematurely ended his time at Forest Green. While a breakthrough at Liverpool now looks unlikely, there is hope that Balagizi can still carve out a strong and rewarding career elsewhere.
