‘We understand…’ – Sky Sports provide fresh Federico Chiesa transfer update as Serie A pair target January deal
With almost a week of the January transfer window now gone, Federico Chiesa’s future continues to generate plenty of debate.
The forward has again found himself largely limited to cameos from the bench this season, having started just two Premier League matches in his 17 months at Anfield. That lack of opportunities has come despite Arne Slot being short of attacking options in recent weeks.
On Monday, Fabrizio Romano reported that Chiesa’s former club Juventus had made “formal contact” about a potential return to Turin this month. However, Liverpool Echo journalist James Pearce later suggested on X that Liverpool have received no such approach from the Serie A giants.
Latest update on Chiesa’s situation
Sky Sports News provided a fresh update on Tuesday lunchtime, relaying information from their Italian counterparts regarding interest from Serie A clubs.
They stated: “Napoli and Juventus are interested in signing the player on loan from Liverpool, according to Sky in Italy. However, we understand that Chiesa is highly unlikely to leave the club during this transfer window.
“There have been no formal offers made to Liverpool for Chiesa, either on loan or permanently, and the club would prefer to keep him this month. Sky in Italy also reports that Liverpool would only consider permanent offers.
“Chiesa has two-and-a-half years remaining on his Liverpool contract, and while Napoli and Juventus are keen on a loan move, we understand he is very unlikely to depart in this window.”
Summer move more realistic?
With Alexander Isak expected to be out for at least another couple of months and Mohamed Salah still away at the Africa Cup of Nations with Egypt, Liverpool are in no position to allow Chiesa to leave in January, even if he has struggled for regular starts.
It would make sense for the Reds to retain him until the end of the season and reassess his situation in the summer, when the club would have greater flexibility to reshape the squad and source replacements if needed.
Although Chiesa may not be a central figure in Slot’s plans, he remains a firm favourite among supporters and has shown his worth when called upon — most notably with a crucial, goal-saving intervention in stoppage time against Sunderland last month.
The 28-year-old doesn’t strike as a player who would force his way out, but privately he may be frustrated by his limited involvement, especially given Liverpool’s recent shortage of attacking options.
For now, Liverpool simply cannot afford to let him go, and all signs point towards him staying put. Still, as long as his role remains largely restricted to substitute appearances, speculation surrounding his future is likely to persist.
