Tottenham step up plans for a surprise double deal, hinting that a major star could be on the way out — sources say.

Tottenham Hotspur are stepping up plans to strengthen their defence, with the left-back role a key priority as uncertainty grows over Destiny Udogie’s long-term future.

Club insiders say Spurs are targeting Borussia Mönchengladbach defender Luca Netz and Santos youngster Souza in what could become a double signing. Netz, 22, has impressed in the Bundesliga with his balance of defensive discipline and attacking threat, and has been tracked by Tottenham for some time. With his contract running out at the end of the season, he is an appealing potential free transfer, but Spurs are pushing to bring him in during the January window and are willing to offer a small fee to secure an early deal. Initial talks have already taken place.

At the same time, Tottenham are pursuing 20-year-old Brazilian prospect Souza, who has caught attention with energetic displays in South America and is seen as a player for the future who can add depth and competition. Santos are open to negotiations but are demanding a significant fee. Spurs had an opening offer of about €9.2m (£8m) turned down, after which Santos indicated they want closer to €20m (£17.3m). Tottenham have since returned with an improved bid of around €15m, with Santos also pushing for a sell-on clause. Souza is understood to be keen on the move.

This twin pursuit reflects concerns over Udogie, who has been a regular since arriving from Udinese in 2022 but has struggled with injuries and inconsistent form this season. Tottenham are considering their options, including a loan or permanent move in the summer to create space for new arrivals.

Spurs’ activity in the market fits their aim of competing for a top-four finish and progressing in Europe, with Thomas Frank stressing the importance of squad depth after repeated injury problems in recent seasons.

Elsewhere, Tottenham are cooling on activating their £26m option to sign João Palhinha, alerting rival London clubs who are ready to move if the chance arises. The club is also quietly drawing up a list of potential managerial candidates for 2026, with Roberto De Zerbi high on that list, although Frank is not under immediate threat and will be fully assessed at the end of the season.

In addition, intermediaries have informed Spurs, Manchester City and Newcastle about Roma right-back Wesley Franca. The Brazilian has impressed since arriving from Flamengo, and Roma could be open to selling if they receive strong offers that help fund a wider rebuild.
