‘I expect…’ – Arne Slot delivers post-match update on Rio Ngumoha after Barnsley injury scare
Arne Slot appeared keen to ease any worries over Rio Ngumoha’s fitness following Liverpool’s 4-1 victory over Barnsley on Monday night.
The 17-year-old was given a rare start in the FA Cup third round for the second consecutive season and caused plenty of problems for the visitors’ defence during his spell at Anfield.
However, just after the 70-minute mark, Ngumoha overstretched while attempting to keep the ball in play. He received treatment on the pitch and was eventually replaced by Ryan Gravenberch, sparking concern among supporters.
Slot plays down Ngumoha injury fears
While fans may have feared the worst as the teenager left the field in discomfort, Slot suggested the issue was not serious. Speaking to TNT Sports after the match (via Sky Sports), the Liverpool head coach said:
“I hope that’s cramp. I expect it to be cramp as well. He hasn’t played that many minutes this season. Today he managed 70 to 75 minutes, which is good for him.
“Without wanting to disrespect [Barnsley], the intensity in the Premier League is even higher. This is a good first step for Rio, so he just needs to keep working really hard to reach 90 minutes at this level.”
Encouraging signs from Slot’s update
Slot’s suggestion that Ngumoha was dealing with cramp rather than a muscle problem is reassuring, and there is hope that medical checks will confirm nothing more serious.
Given that Conor Bradley’s season was recently cut short by a knee injury against Arsenal, supporters were understandably anxious about another young player suffering a major setback. Thankfully, that scenario now seems unlikely.
Ngumoha impressed once again during his time on the pitch. According to Sofascore, he completed four dribbles, 22 of his 26 passes (an 86% success rate), created two key chances and won six duels.
Slot is expected to manage the winger’s minutes carefully for the remainder of the season, with starts likely to come in lower-pressure fixtures and cameo roles elsewhere. Still, his availability could prove crucial, especially with Liverpool already dealing with attacking absences.
The calm tone of Slot’s post-match comments suggests there is no major injury concern, which will come as a huge relief to everyone connected with Liverpool.
