Mohamed Salah is expected to remain at Liverpool for the rest of the current season, although the possibility of an early departure before the end of his contract cannot be completely ruled out.
That update comes from David Ornstein, who has offered fresh insight into the Egyptian forward’s future as he continues his pursuit of an elusive Africa Cup of Nations title. Egypt face Senegal in the semi-finals on Wednesday night, with Salah playing a key role in their run.
The 33-year-old has been the subject of intense scrutiny in recent weeks following his heated post-match comments after Liverpool’s 3–3 draw with Leeds. Salah suggested his relationship with Arne Slot had deteriorated and claimed someone at the club was attempting to make him a scapegoat, remarks that quickly made headlines.
Salah expected to stay at least until the summer
Those comments sparked speculation that Salah’s time at Anfield could be coming to an end. However, after featuring in Liverpool’s 2–0 victory over Brighton before leaving for AFCON, indications are that he is set to remain with the club for at least the remainder of the campaign.
Writing in The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet, Ornstein explained that despite recent uncertainty, Salah is fully expected to see out the season at Liverpool. While the hope is that the situation stabilises and he completes his contract, which runs until June 2027, Ornstein added that discussions over an early exit could take place if tensions persist.
Salah unlikely to accept a bench role on his return
Salah’s substitute appearance against Brighton hinted at an easing of tensions between player and manager, but questions around his long-term future are likely to resurface once he returns from AFCON next week.
The winger has not started a match for Liverpool since the heavy defeat to PSV Eindhoven in late November, and with the Reds unbeaten in 11 games since then, it remains unclear whether he will immediately reclaim his place in the starting XI. That said, Salah is unlikely to be content with a reduced role, particularly with Alexander Isak sidelined until at least the end of February.
His AFCON return of four goals and one assist only strengthens the argument for his swift reintegration into Slot’s lineup.
Ultimately, Salah will need to carry that form back to Merseyside. He has scored just five goals in 20 appearances for Liverpool this season, and putting the fallout from his Elland Road comments behind him will be crucial.
Given the extraordinary legacy he has built at the club, it would be unfortunate for Salah’s Liverpool career to end on a sour note. Ideally, any remaining issues can be resolved, allowing one of the greatest players in the club’s history to receive the farewell he deserves — whenever that time comes, hopefully no earlier than the end of his current deal in June 2027.
