Jurgen Klopp has moved quickly to shut down talk linking him with the Real Madrid job next season after Xabi Alonso was abruptly relieved of his duties, with Álvaro Arbeloa stepping in as interim boss.
Alonso’s reign at the Bernabéu lasted just seven months, with the former Liverpool midfielder dismissed on Monday. Belgian reporter Sacha Tavolieri has since claimed, via CaughtOffside, that senior figures at Real Madrid are seriously weighing up Klopp, the man Arne Slot replaced at Anfield. Nearly two years after stepping away from Liverpool following a legendary spell in charge, the 58-year-old has not returned to frontline management, instead accepting a strategic role as Red Bull’s Head of Global Soccer last year.
Klopp dismisses Madrid talk
Speaking to ServusTV On following Alonso’s exit, Klopp was asked whether he had been contacted amid the speculation. He confirmed that his phone had indeed been busy, though not with calls from Spain.
“It has rung, yes — just not from Madrid,” he said. “A few people felt they needed to reach out to me personally.”
Klopp suggested Alonso’s dismissal highlighted deeper issues at the club. He pointed to the former Bayer Leverkusen coach’s impressive credentials and questioned how someone of his calibre could be shown the door so quickly.
“If a coach like Xabi Alonso, who has demonstrated over the last two years what an exceptional talent he is, is forced out after six months, it says a lot,” Klopp explained. “It shows there’s no patience anymore, and it underlines the extreme expectations at Real Madrid. Making such a call immediately after losing a cup final to Barcelona tells its own story.”
He added that while rumours had been circulating, the situation had no bearing on him personally.
“This has absolutely nothing to do with me, and it didn’t spark anything either,” Klopp said. “I was genuinely surprised. Then I received a few messages and replied with a range of emojis.”
Why Klopp and Real Madrid don’t align
Klopp’s comments cut to the heart of Real Madrid’s unforgiving environment, and despite his elite reputation, a move to the Spanish giants would appear ill-suited to his strengths. Throughout his career at Mainz, Borussia Dortmund and Liverpool, Klopp has flourished where patience, trust and long-term planning were central — the opposite of Madrid’s win-now culture.
Equally important is the connection he forges with supporters. At each of his former clubs, his personality matched the fanbase perfectly. At Real Madrid, even decorated former players such as Alonso are quickly discarded when results falter.
Klopp may yet feel the pull of management again, and if he does, Europe’s biggest clubs would surely line up. But the prospect of him taking on the pressure cooker of the Bernabéu appears highly unlikely.
A future return to Liverpool in some capacity remains possible — a door Klopp himself has not closed — just as Alonso could one day resurface at Anfield as a manager. For now, however, Arne Slot remains in charge. Despite a few errors and some justified scrutiny this season, he deserves backing unless his position truly becomes untenable.
