The head coach has announced the Liverpool return of a midfielder famously praised by Jurgen Klopp as “a joy to watch.”
A Liverpool player who had been sent out on loan has reportedly returned to Merseyside, with only some remaining paperwork to complete before his temporary spell is formally ended.
Just under five months after joining Ajax on what was supposed to be a season-long loan, James McConnell is close to rejoining his parent club following a deeply disappointing stint in Amsterdam. The midfielder was signed by former Liverpool assistant Johnny Heitinga, but after the 42-year-old was dismissed in early November, McConnell failed to feature again and also struggled with injury issues (Transfermarkt).
Ajax confirm McConnell’s return to Liverpool
Lewis Steele reported in late December that Liverpool were expected to recall McConnell this month, and that scenario now appears to be unfolding. Heitinga’s replacement, Fred Grim, has confirmed that the 21-year-old is effectively already back at Anfield, with only minor administrative details left to finalise. Speaking via Liverpool World, Grim said:
“James McConnell has returned to Liverpool. There are just a few formalities to be sorted, and then everything will be official.”
What lies ahead for McConnell?
Unfortunately, circumstances conspired against McConnell’s move to Ajax, and Liverpool’s decision-makers must now weigh up the best next step in his development. His prospects once looked extremely promising—Jurgen Klopp described him as “a joy to watch” during pre-season ahead of the 2023/24 campaign—but more than two years on, he has managed only 13 senior appearances for the Reds, a number that seems unlikely to rise in the near future.
With fierce competition in Liverpool’s midfield and McConnell’s recent injury setbacks, breaking into the first team ahead of players such as Ryan Gravenberch or Curtis Jones would be a significant challenge.
However, Liverpool have greater flexibility with McConnell than with Harvey Elliott, who has already represented two clubs this season and is therefore unable to secure another loan move. As McConnell has not featured for Liverpool this campaign, he remains eligible to join another club on loan before the summer, which could offer a valuable opportunity to gain regular minutes.
While his long-term future at Anfield is unclear, the immediate priority will be for McConnell to return to fitness, get back on the pitch, and move past his difficult time in Amsterdam—hopefully reigniting the promise Klopp once saw in him during the final phase of his tenure at Liverpool.
