Mixed signals surround Federico Chiesa as Juventus are said to be in “ongoing talks” over his situation.
Federico Chiesa’s future has been a major talking point throughout the January transfer window, with uncertainty continuing to surround the Italian winger.
Nearly 18 months after his move to Liverpool, the 28-year-old has yet to establish himself as a regular starter under Arne Slot, sparking strong links with a return to Italy — and in particular, a reunion with one of his former clubs.
Earlier this month, Fabrizio Romano reported that Juventus had made “formal contact” to express their interest in bringing Chiesa back to Turin. However, that claim was quickly challenged by James Pearce, who stated via X that Liverpool had received no such approach from the Serie A giants.
Mixed messages on Chiesa’s situation
On Wednesday evening, Tuttomercatoweb suggested that Juventus are “determined” to re-sign Chiesa and have been in “constant contact” with Liverpool. The report also claimed that the Reds are open to selling the winger and that Chiesa himself is eager to return to the Allianz Stadium.
That stance clashes with The Athletic’s Transfer DealSheet earlier in the week, which insisted that Liverpool are “highly unlikely” to allow Chiesa to leave this month and have no intention of selling unless a substantial permanent bid arrives.
Why Liverpool keeping Chiesa makes sense
With reports pulling in different directions, it’s difficult to pinpoint the true state of play regarding Chiesa’s future. However, the more reliable indication appears to come from The Athletic and James Pearce, widely regarded as one of the most dependable voices on Liverpool matters.
While Chiesa may not be a guaranteed starter under Slot, his involvement has increased this season. He has already featured 50% more times in the current campaign than he did across the entirety of 2024/25, according to Transfermarkt.
Given Alexander Isak’s ongoing injury concerns and the uncertainty surrounding Mohamed Salah’s reintegration following the Africa Cup of Nations, Liverpool are hardly in a position to weaken their attacking options midway through the season.
Unless Chiesa actively pushes for a move — which seems unlikely given his positive attitude behind the scenes despite limited minutes — it would make far more sense for Liverpool to retain him until at least the end of the campaign.
The responsibility now falls on the Italian to seize any opportunities he’s given. He struggled to make an impact against Barnsley on Monday night, where the match largely passed him by, but there’s still time for him to prove his value.
Hopefully, Chiesa remains at Anfield for the rest of the season and shows Arne Slot exactly why he deserves a long-term future at the club.
