“Agreement almost done” – Fabrizio Romano’s Marc Guehi news spells concern for Liverpool
If Liverpool are serious about signing Marc Guehi, now is the moment to act. After the collapse of last summer’s deadline-day move for the Crystal Palace captain, Fabrizio Romano revealed earlier this week that the Reds are “really pushing” to land the England international.
Yet a fresh update from the Italian transfer expert on Friday suggests that one of Liverpool’s main domestic rivals is now firmly in the driving seat to secure the 25-year-old.
Romano: Man City closing in on Guehi
Following The Athletic’s reports of Manchester City’s growing interest, it seems the Etihad side are moving more decisively than any of Guehi’s other suitors. Romano posted on X:
“EXCLUSIVE: Manchester City advance on Marc Guehi deal as big approach has been made in the last 12h. Manchester City presented important proposal to Guehi in terms of contract, eventually ready to proceed also with Crystal Palace. Deal now closer with #MCFC.”
Liverpool at risk of missing out
Although no agreement has yet been finalized between Guehi and City, Pep Guardiola’s team clearly appear further ahead than anyone else in the race for the Palace captain.
Sky Sports’ Kaveh Solhekol previously reported that last summer’s move fell through because Palace couldn’t secure a replacement, something Liverpool might have avoided had they acted earlier. If FSG’s plan is to wait until Guehi becomes a free agent after this season, they could be out of luck if a proactive suitor like City completes a deal this month.
Arne Slot has had to rely on just three senior centre-backs for much of the season due to Giovanni Leoni’s ACL injury. Coupled with the worrying number of goals Liverpool have been conceding, the situation should be raising alarm bells at Anfield.
Liverpool could have wasted no time at the start of January to pursue Guehi, but instead, Manchester City now appear the clear favourites to secure his signature. Should the England international be unveiled at the Etihad before month’s end, it would be a stark indictment of those running the show at L4.
