Arne Slot hints at bigger role for Mohamed Salah as Liverpool prepare for Champions League clash
Liverpool manager Arne Slot has suggested that Mohamed Salah could take on a more prominent role now that he has returned from AFCON.
The Egypt international had struggled earlier this season, leading to a dip in form and a public disagreement with Slot. However, the Dutch coach appears to be moving past those issues.
Speaking to BBC Sport ahead of Liverpool’s upcoming fixture, Slot praised Salah’s return and downplayed any lingering tension.
“I’m really happy to have him back,” Slot said. “During his absence, we’ve done fairly well, conceding few chances and gradually creating more. Having Salah back only strengthens us. There’s only one player who’s scored more for this club, but sadly I can’t play Ian Rush anymore! So it’s a big boost to have him here.”
Slot emphasized the depth in his attacking options, noting that Salah and Cody Gakpo are the only two wingers this season to have played more than 100 Premier League minutes. While Jeremie Frimpong and Florian Wirtz can also operate in wide roles, Slot believes Salah brings something uniquely decisive.
He also highlighted Salah’s Champions League record, noting, “Mo has 45 goals for Liverpool in this competition, far ahead of anyone else. It’s fantastic to have him back, especially if he can reach those levels again.”
Despite domestic struggles, Liverpool could channel their efforts into a strong Champions League campaign. With a rich history in the tournament, having won it six times and reached three finals under Jurgen Klopp, Slot may see Salah’s return as a key opportunity to bring some optimism to a challenging season.
