Liverpool announce defender’s departure from Anfield hours ahead of pivotal Champions League clash
Liverpool left-back Luke Chambers has completed a loan switch to Charlton Athletic for the remainder of the campaign.
The 21-year-old has only recently returned to fitness after a back injury prematurely ended his loan spell at Wigan Athletic during the early months of 2025, with that move cut short in April.
This marks the fourth loan of Chambers’ Liverpool career. He previously enjoyed two stints with Wigan, in addition to a four-month spell at Kilmarnock in 2023.
Liverpool confirm Chambers’ loan move
Just hours before Liverpool face Marseille in the Champions League, the club officially announced on their website that Chambers will spend the rest of the season on loan at Charlton.
The young defender could make his debut for Nathan Jones’ side this weekend, with Charlton travelling to Millwall for an all-London encounter on Saturday.
Chance to rebuild momentum at Charlton
Chambers has made only four senior competitive appearances to date, all coming during the 2023/24 season. His full debut arrived in a Europa League home fixture against Toulouse, where his performance earned high praise from Trent Alexander-Arnold. However, persistent back issues over the past 18 months have stalled his development.
He now joins a Charlton side currently sitting 18th in the Championship, just four points clear of the relegation places. It remains to be seen how Jones will utilise the Liverpool loanee, particularly in his favoured 3-1-4-2 system.
Chambers could be asked to operate as a left-sided centre-back or given more freedom to push forward down the flank and contribute offensively.
Regardless of his role, the hope is that he can secure consistent minutes at The Valley and use this opportunity to reignite his progress — potentially putting himself back on Arne Slot’s radar when he returns to Anfield later this year.
