Steven Gerrard takes aim at Arne Slot over remarks made after Marseille victory

Steven Gerrard praises Arne Slot’s composure after Marseille victory
Liverpool icon Steven Gerrard shared his thoughts on Arne Slot following the Reds’ 3–0 Champions League win over Marseille.
On Wednesday, Liverpool secured their second win of 2026, comfortably defeating Ligue 1 side Marseille at the Stade Vélodrome. The result comes amid growing scrutiny on Slot after recent underwhelming Premier League performances against Leeds United, Fulham, and Burnley.
Pressure on the Dutch manager intensified recently following Real Madrid’s decision to sack former Liverpool star Xabi Alonso, who has been linked as a potential replacement for Slot.
Despite the off-field speculation, Gerrard spoke positively about Slot’s approach and resilience after the Marseille win.
Liverpool’s latest league outing saw them draw 1–1 with Burnley at Anfield on January 17, marking their sixth draw in a 13-game unbeaten streak across all competitions. The reigning Premier League champions currently sit fourth, closer to 16th-placed Leeds than league leaders Arsenal, who are 14 points ahead. In the Champions League, a win against Qarabag FK next week would secure a top-four finish.
Reflecting on Slot’s performance under pressure, Gerrard highlighted the manager’s tactical acumen and called for recognition of his efforts. “I’m really pleased for him. It can’t be easy when you’re under that pressure. His tactics were spot on tonight. He deserves a lot of praise and credit,” Gerrard told TNT Sports.
