Arne Slot has confirmed that Calvin Ramsay will be available for selection when Liverpool travel to Bournemouth on Saturday, having missed the midweek victory over Marseille.
The Scottish right-back was unable to feature at the Stade Velodrome because he was not registered in Liverpool’s Champions League squad for the league phase, and he is too old to qualify for List B status. Despite that, Ramsay has been included on the bench in recent Premier League fixtures, and his role within the squad has grown following Conor Bradley’s season-ending injury.
Speaking at his pre-match press conference on Friday, Slot provided an update on player availability ahead of the trip to the Vitality Stadium. He revealed, via the Liverpool Echo, that Federico Chiesa remains a doubt after picking up an injury during the warm-up before the Marseille match, but confirmed there were no other new injury concerns.
Slot also clarified that Ramsay will be in contention against Bournemouth after being ineligible for Wednesday’s European clash.
While the head coach caused a stir last week by suggesting he has stronger options at right-back than the 22-year-old, his latest comments suggest Ramsay remains part of his plans. Jeremie Frimpong is expected to retain his place due to his form and experience, meaning Ramsay is likely to start on the bench once again.
However, with Frimpong’s injury history this season raising some concerns, Ramsay could yet become an important figure as the campaign progresses. UEFA regulations allow clubs to make up to three changes to their Champions League squad ahead of the knockout rounds, potentially opening the door for Ramsay to replace Bradley if Liverpool avoid making additions in January.
Although his opportunities may be limited and throwing him in at a critical stage would carry some risk given his lack of senior appearances, Liverpool’s history shows how quickly squad players can become key contributors.
