Tottenham could complete a deal for Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson at a relatively low cost if the two clubs reach an agreement, according to journalist Alasdair Gold. Spurs made an unexpected approach for the Scotland international on Friday, accelerating plans that were originally focused on signing him on a free transfer in the summer. The move was prompted by Ben Davies’ broken ankle, which has created an urgent need for defensive cover.

With Robertson’s contract at Anfield expiring at the end of the season, Liverpool are open to talks over an early exit as the player looks for certainty over his future. Given he has just six months remaining on his deal, the Merseyside club are not expected to demand a significant fee.

Although some reports suggested Tottenham would need to pay a substantial amount to land Robertson in January, Gold stated on X that any agreed fee would be “far lower” than those figures. He also noted that Robertson will be 32 in around six weeks, further reducing his market value.

Gold explained that Spurs are keen to add experience and leadership to the squad, which influenced the signing of Conor Gallagher and their pursuit of Robertson. The defender brings a strong winning pedigree, having lifted multiple major honours, including two Premier League titles and the Champions League. Tottenham believe his mentality could help improve the squad’s culture and benefit younger players.

Both Gallagher and Robertson qualify as homegrown players, helping to offset Ben Davies’ expected departure when his contract expires this summer after 12 years at the club. While Tottenham are still planning to add at least one attacking player, the interest in Robertson makes sense, particularly with Destiny Udogie’s recurring availability concerns.

Personal terms are understood to be in place, with club-to-club negotiations ongoing.
