“I need all my players” – Arne Slot appears to fire subtle message at FSG following Liverpool loss
Arne Slot appeared to aim a subtle warning at Liverpool’s hierarchy after the damaging 3-2 defeat to Bournemouth — a loss that proved costly on several fronts.
From a Reds perspective, the night unravelled in chaotic fashion. Alisson Becker was involved in a freak incident as he collided with Joe Gomez while trying to stop Evanilson from opening the scoring. With Gomez receiving treatment off the pitch, Bournemouth quickly capitalised, with Alex Jimenez doubling their advantage before Wataru Endo could be introduced — a sequence Jamie Redknapp branded “amateurish” on commentary.
The setback arrived less than 48 hours after surprise reports claimed Tottenham Hotspur are pushing to sign Andy Robertson. Any potential exit for the Scot would further thin out a Liverpool defence already stretched to its limits.
Robertson, 31, was introduced at half-time in place of Milos Kerkez, who struggled badly during the opening period on his return to the Vitality Stadium.
Slot: “I need all my players”
Speaking to Sky Sports after the match, Slot was asked whether Liverpool still require Robertson. His response was telling.
“I think I need all my players,” the head coach said. “Robbo had to come in at half-time, in my opinion. I always knew another 90 minutes for Milos against such an intense Bournemouth side wasn’t possible.
“I knew I would have to bring Robbo on, but I’d already used a substitution in the first half and then you only have two windows left. So bringing him on at half-time ensured Milos stays available for the rest of the season.
“There are a lot of games to play with the players we currently have. I have to manage that, because the last thing we need right now is another injury.”
A message to FSG?
Sceptics may argue the change was reactive rather than planned, given Kerkez’s difficult evening — particularly his role in Jimenez’s goal. Still, Slot’s emphasis on managing minutes underlines a very real issue.
With Ibrahima Konate on compassionate leave and Gomez forced off injured, Liverpool were left using fringe midfielder Endo as an emergency centre-back — a scenario that highlights the alarming lack of defensive depth.
The possibility of Robertson departing for Spurs is troubling not only due to his importance and connection with supporters, but also because of how bare the squad already is. Slot’s insistence that he needs “all” of his players could well be interpreted as a plea for the board to resist any January sale.
Liverpool are already heavily dependent on Virgil van Dijk, Jeremie Frimpong and Konate staying fit, with few reliable alternatives available. The severity of Gomez’s injury following his clash with Alisson remains a major concern.
Allowing Robertson to leave this month without bringing in defensive cover would be an extraordinary gamble by the Anfield hierarchy. Decisions made between now and deadline day could have serious ramifications — including whether Liverpool can somehow rescue Champions League qualification from what is fast becoming a disastrous campaign.
