Tottenham are considering a move to sign a £62 million-rated star who is widely regarded as one of the finest players in Europe.

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly planning a major upgrade in a key area of their squad ahead of next season, with Roma goalkeeper Mile Svilar emerging as a prime target as they aim to tighten up a fragile defence.

The club is expected to review both its defensive unit and goalkeeping options, which could lead to a big-money approach for Svilar following his impressive rise in Rome over the last two campaigns.

According to Sport Witness, Spurs have been monitoring the Belgian-born shot-stopper since mid-January. With current first-choice goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario attracting interest from several Serie A clubs ahead of the summer window, Tottenham’s pursuit of Svilar has gathered momentum.

Svilar has been described as “among the best goalkeepers in Europe,” prompting Roma to place a valuation of around €70 million (£62 million) on him during the January transfer period. Last season, he recorded a 77 percent save rate and finished joint-top for clean sheets in Serie A. He also signed a contract extension until 2030, meaning any potential deal would require a substantial fee to convince Roma to sell.

Interest in Svilar is also believed to be strong from Chelsea, Bournemouth and Bundesliga heavyweights Bayern Munich, with his reputation continuing to grow across Europe due to his consistent performances and standout statistics.

If a transfer were completed, Svilar would become the third-most expensive goalkeeper in football history, behind Liverpool’s Alisson Becker and former Chelsea keeper Kepa Arrizabalaga, now at Arsenal. Such a move would place significant expectations on the goalkeeper, particularly with Tottenham having faced defensive difficulties in recent months.

While Vicario has delivered solid performances between the posts for Spurs, comparisons with elite goalkeepers across Europe highlight a clear gap. The likes of David Raya, Gianluigi Donnarumma, Alisson Becker and Emiliano Martínez have established themselves as top-level performers, while Vicario remains just below that bracket.

Svilar’s numbers suggest he is already operating at that elite level. He has made 114 appearances for Roma and 23 for Benfica, establishing himself as first choice over the past two seasons and playing a key role in Roma’s strong domestic push.
