Liverpool perform a significant transfer U-turn that could have major implications for a potential Micky van de Ven move
Liverpool have reportedly made a dramatic late decision to abandon a move that would have seen club icon Andy Robertson swap Anfield for Premier League rivals Tottenham this month.
Although discussions had taken place between the two clubs and Robertson was understood to be open to a new challenge, Liverpool’s senior figures have now reversed course as the transfer window enters its final days.
With the February 2 deadline approaching, the Reds have informed Spurs that their vice-captain is no longer available, opting to preserve squad depth rather than cash in on the 31-year-old for a modest fee.
Liverpool reverse stance on Andy Robertson transfer
Transfer journalist Ben Jacobs revealed the update on X, explaining that while negotiations were advanced, Liverpool ultimately felt their defensive situation made selling Robertson too much of a risk.
According to Jacobs, the club seriously weighed up Tottenham’s proposal — believed to be worth more than £5 million including add-ons — and even explored the option of recalling Kostas Tsimikas from his loan at AS Roma to provide cover for first-choice left-back Milos Kerkez.
In the end, however, Arne Slot’s side chose not to push ahead with the deal.
Jacobs also stressed that Robertson remained fully professional throughout the process. While he was receptive to a move to North London, he never attempted to force an exit.
He said:
“Andy Robertson is set to stay at Liverpool for now. The club do not feel they are in a position to sell at this stage.
“All discussions have been handled with the best interests of both Robertson and Liverpool in mind.
“Liverpool considered Spurs’ offer, worth over £5m plus add-ons, and looked at recalling Kostas Tsimikas, but have decided not to proceed at this moment.
“While late-window developments could change things, Liverpool currently plan to keep Robertson.
“Robertson has acted professionally throughout. Although open to Spurs, he did not push for a move.”
There had been suggestions that allowing Robertson to join Tottenham could help Liverpool in future talks over a potential summer move for Micky van de Ven.
However, with the deal now shelved, the Merseyside club may miss out on gaining that negotiating edge down the line.

Keeping Robertson ensures that one of Liverpool’s most successful modern-era players will not depart quietly in a mid-season, cut-price transfer.
