Liverpool have formally announced they’ve reached an agreement in principle to sign highly rated Austria Vienna defender Ifeanyi Ndukwe.
The transfer, which is still pending international clearance, underlines the Reds’ continued focus on snapping up elite young prospects from across Europe as part of their long-term strategy.
Liverpool confirmed that Ndukwe will stay in Austria for the rest of the season before officially joining the club and linking up with the U21s in the summer of 2026.
Who is Ifeanyi Ndukwe?
Ndukwe is widely regarded as one of the most exciting young defenders currently emerging in European football.
The centre-back, who is 17 and turns 18 in March, will then be eligible to complete his move to Merseyside.
His profile rose dramatically at the 2025 U17 World Cup in Qatar, where he played a key role in Austria’s run to the final. Ndukwe featured in all but one match as Austria finished runners-up to Portugal, delivering a series of standout performances.
He also grabbed headlines by scoring in a dominant 4-0 victory over England, a display that attracted interest from several major clubs, including Inter Milan and multiple Bundesliga sides.
At club level, Ndukwe has been a regular for Austria Vienna’s reserve team, the Young Violets, competing in Austria’s second tier. His calmness on the ball and physical presence have already earned him exposure to the first team, with nine appearances on the senior matchday bench this season.
Not an immediate solution for Liverpool’s defence
Despite the excitement surrounding the signing, Ndukwe is not expected to address Liverpool’s short-term centre-back issues under Arne Slot.
Defensive depth has been a growing concern, with Virgil van Dijk turning 35 this year and uncertainty surrounding Ibrahima Konaté’s contract. Liverpool have also suffered setbacks in the transfer market, including a serious injury to summer arrival Giovanni Leoni and an unsuccessful move for Marc Guehi.
In addition, Joe Gomez has been sidelined through injury, leaving Konaté as Van Dijk’s primary partner.
Although Liverpool continue to be linked with Micky van de Ven, that move is viewed as one for the summer window.
With Ndukwe set to join the U21s initially, his signing is clearly aimed at the future rather than providing an instant fix for the first team. Reportedly costing around £2.6 million, the deal suggests Liverpool believe they’ve secured a potential top-class talent before his value skyrockets.
For now, however, supporters will have to be patient before seeing the much-hyped “Austrian giant” in a Liverpool shirt.
