Tottenham have reached an agreement in principle to sign a Premier League star, with manager Thomas Frank now waiting for the final green light to complete the deal, according to a new update.
Spurs face a busy end to January as Frank remains under pressure. After securing a 2-2 draw at Burnley last weekend, courtesy of Cristian Romero’s last-minute equaliser, the manager continues to grapple with a disappointing season. Despite spending around £171 million last summer and winning the Europa League in May, the Lilywhites are closer to the relegation zone than a top-four finish and Champions League qualification next season.
Tottenham’s domestic form has been poor, with just seven wins from 23 Premier League games. The club’s European success has arguably been the main factor keeping Frank in his role. The Lewis family, Johan Lange, and Vinai Venkatesham have backed the under-fire Dane with new signings this month, including England international Conor Gallagher and highly-rated left-back Souza for a combined £48 million.
Attention now turns to a new forward and a potential replacement for Ben Davies, whose career at Tottenham is effectively over following a serious injury. The veteran left-back is expected to leave on a free this summer after what was likely his final game for the club against West Ham and may even miss the World Cup should Wales qualify.
To replace Davies, Spurs opened talks with Liverpool over a surprise move for Andrew Robertson. The £160,000-per-week Scotland international, a multiple Premier League winner and Champions League medalist with 364 Liverpool appearances, is out of contract at the end of the season. Spurs advanced their planned summer pursuit of Robertson due to Davies’ injury, though negotiations recently stalled.
According to talkSPORT and GiveMeSport reporter Ben Jacobs, Tottenham have agreed a deal in principle for Robertson worth around £5 million, but final approval is still pending from both Liverpool and the player. Liverpool will only sell if they can secure a replacement, with attempts to recall Kostas Tsimikas from Roma proving difficult. Roma have rejected a £7 million bid for David Møller Wolfe and are exploring other options.
While Liverpool and Robertson remain relaxed, the move will only proceed if Roma provide a left-back replacement. Robertson was informed earlier this week that the transfer, originally planned after Liverpool’s UCL game against Qarabag, is currently on hold. Securing Robertson as Davies’ successor would be a strategic move given his experience, winning mentality, and pedigree.
As Frank waits for the potential domino effect in the transfer market, Spurs also continue their search for an alternative attacking option.
