“Liverpool’s plan is clear…” – David Ornstein reveals the Anfield hierarchy’s position on Arne Slot
David Ornstein has revealed that Liverpool’s hierarchy remain committed to Arne Slot, with the intention to continue supporting the head coach unless results slide to a truly worrying level.
Pressure has mounted on the Reds boss during a difficult second season at Anfield. A seventh Premier League loss last weekend left Liverpool down in sixth place, intensifying scrutiny on the 47-year-old.
Jamie Carragher has suggested that Slot’s position could become untenable if Liverpool fail to secure Champions League qualification, while speculation linking fan favourite Xabi Alonso with a potential return to Anfield has only added to the noise surrounding the Dutchman’s future.
Ornstein: Liverpool remain patient with Slot
Speaking on Sky Sports’ The Transfer Show, Ornstein was asked about Slot’s standing and made it clear that, for now, the club’s leadership are sticking by him.
The Athletic journalist explained:
“It looks like the club are prepared to give him time, even if a section of the fanbase feels differently. Whenever you check on the situation, the message is the same: nothing will happen before the summer. As with many clubs, the summer is a natural point for assessment, and it’ll be interesting to see how Liverpool approach that period.
“Of course, if performances were to decline drastically, any club would be forced to reconsider their position. But at this moment, the intention at Liverpool is to continue backing him.”
Improvement needed, but patience remains
At other clubs, Slot might already have paid the price for this run of form — especially with Manchester United and Chelsea now above Liverpool after recent managerial changes. However, the Anfield board are adopting a calmer, longer-term view, mindful of the progress made during Slot’s first campaign.
Journalist David Lynch has also reported that Liverpool are reluctant to dismiss Slot mid-season, particularly if it would require installing an interim manager. As things stand, he is expected to see out the remainder of the campaign.
That stance could shift if results collapse entirely over the coming weeks and Champions League qualification becomes unrealistic by early spring. Still, perspective is important: Liverpool are only two points off fourth place and remain in contention for two trophies.
Despite the challenges of this season, there is still a clear pathway for Slot to steady the ship and finish strongly. Continued backing seems justified — but with the clear understanding that failure to qualify for the Champions League would be unacceptable, and that visible improvement must begin immediately.
