Instead, the atmosphere around Anfield has soured following post-match comments from Arne Slot that many supporters believe were a subtle dig at his predecessor, Jürgen Klopp.
Despite the dominant display, attention quickly shifted away from the players and onto Slot’s remarks. With domestic form faltering, the Liverpool head coach appeared keen to justify his record by drawing comparisons with the club’s recent European history — a move that has not gone down well with sections of the fanbase.
Slot comments spark Klopp comparison debate
Speaking to beIN Sports after the match, Slot seemed to contrast his side’s continental progress with struggles during Klopp’s final season.
“It’s very good because it was only two years ago when we as a club played in the Europa League and went out in the quarter-final against Atalanta,” Slot said.
“Now two years in a row, last 16 and we are hungry for more, so it’s nice to be back there again, even in a season where we’re dealing with injuries.”
While his comments were factually correct — Liverpool were eliminated by Atalanta in 2024 — many fans felt the timing and tone were unnecessary. Referencing a low point of Klopp’s farewell campaign in order to underline his own achievements struck some as ill-judged, given Klopp’s revered status on Merseyside.
Tensions with supporters continue to grow
The backlash is the latest in a series of moments that have strained Slot’s relationship with supporters. Frustration had already been building after his recent claim that Liverpool “have only won the league twice in 30 years,” a remark widely seen as diminishing the club’s legacy.
Slot also raised eyebrows before the Qarabag match by suggesting his maiden Premier League title was aided by an early Champions League exit to PSG, which reduced fixture congestion. The comment was even publicly dismissed by club legend Steven Gerrard.
For a fanbase deeply protective of its history and icons, Slot’s blunt, analytical approach is increasingly being interpreted as dismissive. A 6–0 win would normally smooth over any tension, but if the manager continues to clash with Liverpool’s past, even emphatic victories may struggle to restore harmony.
