Tottenham step up pursuit of surprise Sterling move after Frank gives approval

Tottenham are understood to be in a strong position in the race to sign free agent Raheem Sterling, with sources confirming the club are seriously weighing up a move and that Thomas Frank has given his backing.

Sterling became available after mutually agreeing to terminate the final 18 months of his Chelsea contract, ending a difficult three-and-a-half-year spell at Stamford Bridge where he struggled for consistent game time. The 31-year-old, who joined Chelsea from Manchester City in 2022 for £47.5 million, has not played competitively since May 2025 and spent last season on loan at Arsenal with limited impact.

Spurs view the experienced winger as a possible short-term solution to bolster their attacking depth as they juggle Premier League and Champions League commitments. Sterling’s pace, dribbling ability and proven pedigree — including four Premier League titles and more than 100 top-flight goals — are seen as assets that could strengthen their wide options.

Sources suggest an approach from north London should not be ruled out, particularly given Tottenham’s need for experienced wide players, and Frank is open to the signing.

Sterling is keen to remain in London for family reasons and has attracted interest from West Ham United, Fulham and Crystal Palace. Nottingham Forest have also made contact with the player’s representatives, although his preference is to stay in the capital.

There is also overseas interest, with clubs such as Napoli monitoring the situation. However, Napoli sporting director Giovanni Manna has described a potential deal as difficult due to Sterling’s high wage expectations, having earned more than £300,000 per week at Chelsea. Any move abroad would likely depend on him accepting a significant pay cut. Interest from Major League Soccer has also emerged as Sterling considers his options in a bid to secure regular football ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

For Tottenham, the opportunity represents a low-risk move in terms of transfer fee, though wages and his recent lack of minutes could complicate talks. Any offer from Spurs would likely be on a short-term basis.
