Slot provides detailed injury and transfer update ahead of Newcastle clash
Arne Slot has handed Liverpool a timely injury boost ahead of the visit of Newcastle United, confirming that Jeremie Frimpong will be sidelined for only “a few weeks” rather than facing a season-threatening layoff.
Speaking at the AXA Training Centre with the transfer deadline looming, Slot revealed that Frimpong’s injury is “not as bad as we thought”, although the Dutch defender will miss Saturday night’s clash at Anfield.
“He’s not in the squad tomorrow, so he’ll be out for a few weeks, but not as long as we initially feared,” Slot said via Liverpool FC’s YouTube channel.
Frimpong’s absence leaves Liverpool without a recognised right-back against Newcastle, forcing Slot to consider alternative solutions. Wataru Endo is a genuine option after filling in across several positions recently, while Dominik Szoboszlai could again be asked to adapt.
Slot also delivered encouraging news on Ibou Konate, who has returned to training and is expected to be involved this weekend. Curtis Jones is also available again following illness, providing another midfield boost.
However, Joe Gomez remains unavailable, though Slot suggested his return is not far off. Alexander Isak’s recovery, meanwhile, remains a long-term concern, with the forward still not back on the pitch after recently ditching his walker. Slot also addressed the delayed returns of Jayden Danns and Stefan Bajcetic, stressing the importance of patience following their repeated setbacks.
On the transfer front, Slot struck a familiar tone as the deadline approaches, reiterating that Liverpool will only act if the right player—both in terms of quality and long-term fit—becomes available.
“If we identify a player who can help us and it’s possible to do the deal, then we will,” he said.
With Liverpool struggling for consistency in the Premier League despite strong Champions League performances, Saturday’s meeting with Newcastle will be another test of whether Slot’s side can translate European momentum into domestic progress. Their last encounter ended in a dramatic 3–2 win at St James’ Park, and a similarly demanding contest is expected at Anfield.
