Former Arsenal midfielder and long-standing pundit Paul Merson has offered his detailed score prediction ahead of Tottenham Hotspur’s Premier League meeting with Manchester City, forecasting a lively contest filled with attacking intent and goals at both ends when Pep Guardiola’s side make the trip to north London.
Tottenham approach the fixture in need of an upturn in fortunes following a challenging run of league results that has left them in the bottom half of the table. Despite his Arsenal loyalties, he admitted to often backing Tottenham against City, pointing to Spurs’ strong recent record in this fixture and their tendency to cause Guardiola’s side problems regardless of form.
Merson also offered a critical assessment of City’s recent displays, suggesting they have not been as clinical as usual. He compared their league outing against Wolves with their Champions League match versus Galatasaray, arguing that both followed a similar pattern: a dominant start without sufficient reward, followed by opponents growing into the game and creating problems late on.
He believes Tottenham could once again exploit that weakness. One of the standout battles, in his view, will be between Spurs centre-back Micky van de Ven and Erling Haaland. While Haaland scored recently against Galatasaray, Merson noted that the striker has missed more chances than expected in recent matches — an unusual trait for one of the world’s most feared finishers.
Despite that, Merson insisted there is no long-term concern over Haaland’s threat, describing him as a player capable of exploding into form at any moment. Once that happens, he warned, defences across the league — particularly Arsenal’s — will need to be on high alert.
Beyond Haaland, Merson highlighted City’s supporting attackers, claiming Antoine Semenyo has made an instant impression since joining the club and has done enough to justify a starting role against Spurs. He expects both Haaland and Semenyo to start, with Guardiola’s final attacking decision likely coming down to a choice between Omar Marmoush and Rayan Cherki.
In Merson’s view, Cherki offers the creativity needed to break open stubborn defences and could be decisive if selected. He believes the Frenchman’s ability in tight spaces may be key to converting City’s control into clear chances.
The broader title race also shaped Merson’s thinking. He suggested Arsenal could be seven points clear by the time City kick off, raising doubts about whether Guardiola’s side can significantly cut the gap in this fixture alone. While calling the game a must-win for City, Merson ultimately feels they may fall short.
His verdict is a draw — a high-octane 2-2 scoreline that would allow Arsenal to end the weekend with a six-point cushion at the top.
Why Spurs could still take something from the game
Despite their inconsistent league form, Tottenham getting a result against City would not be a huge surprise. Spurs have managed just three points from their last five Premier League outings, placing them among the division’s poorest sides for form in January after failing to register a single win.
