Liverpool finalize defender transfer before window closes
Liverpool’s late-window business has already included an exit, with the club confirming on the eve of the deadline that 20-year-old full-back Calum Scanlon has joined Cardiff City on loan for the remainder of the 2025–26 season.
An official statement confirmed the temporary switch, noting that Scanlon will work under Brian Barry-Murphy as Cardiff set the pace in League One.
“Liverpool full-back Calum Scanlon will spend the remainder of the 2025–26 campaign on loan at Cardiff City,” the club said.
The update also highlighted Scanlon’s rapid rise since arriving from Birmingham City in 2021. He made his senior Liverpool debut in October 2023, featuring in a Europa League match against Toulouse at Anfield.
Injuries have disrupted his momentum, however. A loan spell at Millwall last season was cut short by a setback, making this latest move an important opportunity for him to build rhythm and consistency.

Arne Slot has stressed that Liverpool’s focus in the closing stages of the window is on strengthening the squad, meaning departures are largely about player development, minutes, and maintaining balance rather than reducing numbers.
With fans still watching for late movement before Monday night, Scanlon’s loan feels like sensible housekeeping — creating a clear route to regular football for a young player while keeping him part of Liverpool’s long-term plans.

During his brief spell at Millwall in 2024–25, Scanlon made four appearances (three starts), logging 169 minutes. He scored once, posted an expected goals figure of 0.22, completed close to 88% of his passes, averaged 1.5 tackles per game, and lost possession just over seven times per match.
It’s a limited sample, but it reinforces the same point: availability has been the main issue. A sustained run of games, with fitness rather than recovery as the headline, is now the priority.
All of this unfolds against a deadline-day backdrop that continues to link Liverpool with defensive targets such as Lutsharel Geertruida and Jeremy Jacquet.
