Liverpool have reportedly identified a 44-year-old manager as their leading candidate to succeed Slot.

Liverpool are reportedly drawing up contingency plans to move on from under-fire head coach Arne Slot following a largely disappointing campaign.

Despite significant investment in the squad last summer, Slot has found it difficult to keep the Reds consistently competing at the highest level. Since October, Liverpool have fallen behind the pace set by Arsenal and Manchester City in the Premier League title race.

While their Champions League performances have been encouraging, those displays have not translated into domestic success. Big-name arrivals such as Alexander Isak and Florian Wirtz have yet to fully justify expectations, with Hugo Ekitike arguably the only signing to make a clear impact so far.

Although no final decision has been made, Fichajes reports that Liverpool are seriously considering Xabi Alonso as a potential successor to Slot. The Spanish coach was recently dismissed by Real Madrid, but his reputation remains strong after his outstanding spell at Bayer Leverkusen, where he famously broke Bayern Munich’s long-standing dominance.

Alonso continues to be admired for his tactical intelligence and progressive playing style, and Liverpool’s hierarchy are said to be keen on the former Reds midfielder returning to Anfield in a managerial role.

Man City competition looms

However, Liverpool may face stiff competition, with Manchester City also believed to be monitoring Alonso as a possible long-term replacement for Pep Guardiola. Guardiola’s future at the Etihad remains uncertain, and reports suggest Alonso is on City’s shortlist.

Former Liverpool boss Jürgen Klopp has previously described Alonso as “exceptional,” underlining the respect he commands within the game.

With a deep understanding of Liverpool’s culture, fan expectations, and footballing identity, Alonso is seen as a natural fit. His history at the club would also ensure instant respect from the dressing room, making him a strong candidate to take over if Slot’s tenure comes to an end.
