Solanke and Gallagher impress in England ratings, leaving Tuchel with decisions to make

The Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross has taken a close look at Dominic Solanke and Conor Gallagher while assessing England players pushing for places in Thomas Tuchel’s 2026 World Cup plans.
Solanke’s recent form for Tottenham is certain to have caught the attention of England boss Tuchel, with key decisions approaching over his attacking options. Spurs’ record signing endured a slow start to his second season after spending five months sidelined following ankle surgery, but his return last month has been eye-catching.
The striker has played a vital role in helping Thomas Frank’s side pick up important results, scoring in Champions League wins over Borussia Dortmund and Eintracht Frankfurt to secure automatic qualification for the last 16.
His standout moment came last weekend when he scored twice — including an outstanding scorpion kick — as Spurs recovered from two goals down to draw 2–2 with Manchester City. Tuchel was in attendance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium and would have taken note.
As part of The Mirror’s new weekly England Player Ratings series ahead of the World Cup, Cross awarded Solanke a 6/10 chance of making the squad, suggesting his prospects could improve significantly if his form continues.
Cross said it would be surprising if Tuchel left north London unimpressed, given Solanke’s recent impact. He described the forward as the standout “fast riser,” praising not just his goals but his overall contribution to the team.
According to Cross, Solanke’s performances will have forced Tuchel to think carefully about his striker options. While Harry Kane is an automatic pick, the debate centres on whether England should select a like-for-like deputy or someone offering a different profile. Ollie Watkins remains the frontrunner, but Cross believes Solanke has now firmly entered the conversation after an exceptional display.
Gallagher still an outsider
Conor Gallagher is another Tottenham player hoping to work his way into England contention. The midfielder joined Spurs from Atletico Madrid in January, committing to a long-term deal in north London.
Cross gave Gallagher a 5/10 chance of making the World Cup squad, describing him as an outsider for now. He noted Gallagher’s determination to revive his international prospects, suggesting the move back to the Premier League was motivated by his desire to catch Tuchel’s eye.
Gallagher chose Spurs over Aston Villa with England firmly in mind, and Cross highlighted his passion for representing his country, having been involved in multiple England squads previously. The key question, however, is whether he offers enough technical quality in possession compared to other midfield options.
Still, Cross believes Gallagher’s move has at least reopened the door. While he remains on the fringes, his energy and contrasting style could work in his favour if Tuchel opts for variety in a larger tournament squad.
