The Reason Romero Will Miss Four Matches Following His Red Card Versus Manchester United
Manchester United’s lunchtime meeting with Tottenham on Saturday was finely poised at the break, but Cristian Romero’s troubled week deteriorated further when he was dismissed for a reckless, studs-first challenge on Casemiro.
Having already missed last weekend’s trip to Manchester City through illness — and after openly criticising Tottenham’s hierarchy for their lack of January transfer business — the Spurs skipper is now set to serve a four-match suspension following his straight red card.
The sending-off proved pivotal, swinging control firmly in United’s favour during a decisive 10-minute spell before halftime and leaving Tottenham facing an uphill battle in the second half. While some supporters questioned why Romero’s punishment exceeds other red-card bans seen during the 2025/26 campaign, Premier League regulations clearly explain the reasoning.
Why Romero Faces a Four-Game Suspension
Romero’s ban has been increased from the usual three matches to four because it represents his second dismissal of the season. FA disciplinary guidelines stipulate that players sent off more than once in the same campaign receive an automatic additional one-game suspension.
Consequently, Romero will also miss the north London derby against Arsenal on February 22. Earlier in the season, he was shown a straight red against Liverpool after striking Ibrahima Konaté and was later hit with further punishment for his behaviour following that incident.
Once this latest suspension has been served, Romero will have missed nine matches this season due to disciplinary issues alone, including time sidelined after accumulating too many yellow cards.
A Turbulent Week Concludes Badly
The 27-year-old’s most recent dismissal — his sixth red card for Tottenham across all competitions — arrives only days after he appeared to criticise the club’s leadership amid an ongoing injury crisis.
Romero had branded it “disgraceful” that Spurs were left with just 11 senior players for their clash with Manchester City, remarks widely viewed as a swipe at the club’s inactivity in the transfer market. Thomas Frank later stated the matter had been dealt with internally.
Last month, Romero also avoided disciplinary action after posting — and later editing — a cryptic social media message aimed at figures within the club who “only show up when things are going well, to tell a few lies.”
Whether by coincidence or consequence, the timing of Romero’s latest red card could scarcely be worse for Tottenham. The club head into the remainder of the weekend’s fixtures sitting just three points above 17th-placed Nottingham Forest — the same position they finished in last season under Ange Postecoglou.
