Tottenham Hotspur have received a welcome boost in the transfer market after Bayern Munich played down any interest in signing Luka Vušković.
The highly rated 18-year-old centre-back, who is on loan at Hamburg from Spurs, has recently been linked with a move to the Bundesliga champions. However, Bayern appear unlikely to pursue a deal despite long-standing awareness of the Croatian defender.
Vušković had been offered to Bayern back in 2023 before his move to north London, but the German giants opted against signing him at the time. Tottenham later secured his services that year, and he has since flourished during his loan spell in Germany.
The teenager’s form has been outstanding this season. He was named Bundesliga Rookie of the Month for January and ranks among the league’s top performers defensively, sitting second for clearances and aerial duels, and fourth for blocks.
Speaking in Germany, Bayern’s director of sport Max Eberl praised Vušković’s development but made it clear the club’s priorities lie elsewhere. He stressed Bayern must first focus on contract extensions and internal squad matters, adding that while Vušković is enjoying an excellent season and is “a very good player,” Bayern already boast significant depth and quality at centre-back.
Vušković, who cost Spurs around £12 million, is increasingly viewed as a long-term option for Tottenham’s defence. With uncertainty surrounding the futures of Micky van de Ven and Cristian Romero, a pathway could open for the young Croatian to return and compete for a starting role.
European football expert Andy Brassell believes Tottenham must handle Vušković’s future carefully, claiming the teenager already looks more convincing than Liverpool’s recent signing Jeremy Jacquet. He highlighted Vušković’s composure, leadership, and maturity, suggesting Spurs either integrate him into their defensive setup or consider moving Romero while his value remains high.
With questions surrounding Tottenham’s direction, managerial future, and European qualification hopes, Vušković nonetheless represents a rare area of clarity and optimism for the club’s long-term planning.
