Premier League Explains Controversial VAR Red Card in Liverpool vs Man City Clash

In one of the most chaotic Premier League matches of the season, Liverpool suffered a dramatic 2–1 home defeat to Manchester City. The game ended in controversy, with Dominik Szoboszlai sent off late on and a City goal disallowed after VAR intervention.

Szoboszlai had earlier given Liverpool the lead with a brilliant free-kick, firing the hosts into a 1–0 advantage. Manchester City responded late, as Bernardo Silva equalised with six minutes remaining in normal time. Deep into injury time, Alisson Becker brought down Matheus Nunes in the box, allowing Erling Haaland to convert the resulting penalty and put City ahead.

In a final attempt to salvage the game, Alisson joined the attack for a late set-piece. The ball was cleared, however, and Rayan Cherki sent a slow pass forward from the halfway line. As the ball rolled towards goal, Szoboszlai and Haaland became entangled in a physical tussle while chasing it, before the ball eventually crossed the line.

VAR reviewed the incident and ruled the goal out, determining that Szoboszlai had illegally impeded Haaland from scoring an easy tap-in. As a result, the Liverpool midfielder was shown a red card.

The Premier League later released a statement explaining the decision, sharing comments from referee Craig Pawson to clarify why the goal was disallowed and the red card issued.

The call left pundit Gary Neville perplexed, as he questioned why advantage had not been played, calling the outcome unjust. Journalist Sam Lee also criticised the decision on social media, arguing that if the referee believed a foul had occurred, play should have been allowed to continue, especially given that a goal resulted.

While many disagreed with the ruling, Haaland defended the referee’s interpretation of the laws, though he expressed sympathy for Szoboszlai. The Norwegian striker admitted he felt the punishment was harsh, suggesting the goal should have stood without a red card, while also voicing frustration that Cherki had not played him in earlier to finish the move himself.
