Liverpool are weighing up a surprise move to re-sign a player they offloaded during last summer’s transfer window.
Liverpool’s long-term strategy at centre-back is continuing to take shape, and a familiar face has now resurfaced as a possible answer.
According to Football Insider, the Reds are giving serious thought to a future move to bring Jarell Quansah back to Anfield from Bayer Leverkusen as part of their broader defensive succession plans.
Quansah departed Liverpool in the summer of 2025 in a deal worth around £35 million, a transfer that formed part of Arne Slot’s sweeping squad rebuild. While the sale of the academy graduate surprised many at the time, the club safeguarded their long-term interests by including a buy-back clause in the agreement.
That clause, which becomes active in 2027, would allow Liverpool to re-sign Quansah for a pre-agreed fee should they decide to activate it.
Why Liverpool are monitoring Quansah
Liverpool’s renewed interest is largely driven by uncertainty within their current defensive ranks.
Ibrahima Konaté is edging closer to the final stages of his contract and could leave on a free transfer if an extension is not agreed. Meanwhile, captain Virgil van Dijk is approaching his mid-30s, naturally raising questions about workload management and long-term succession.
The Reds have already taken steps to address the issue by signing Jérémy Jacquet from Stade Rennais, but internal discussions suggest the club may want to add another centre-back — ideally one with Premier League experience and a strong understanding of Liverpool’s demands.
Quansah’s rise at Leverkusen
Since his move to Germany, Quansah has continued his development, gaining valuable experience in the Bundesliga and European competition.
His calmness on the ball, aerial dominance, and growing positional intelligence have caught the attention of Liverpool’s recruitment team, who are closely monitoring his progress.
That improvement has also been reflected on the international stage. The 23-year-old made his senior England debut last year, starting in a 2-0 World Cup qualifying win over Albania — a significant milestone that highlighted his rapid rise.
With Konaté’s future unresolved, Van Dijk entering a veteran phase, and competition for top-level centre-backs intensifying, the prospect of re-signing a matured academy product is an increasingly appealing option for Liverpool.
