Roberto De Zerbi has reportedly stepped down as Marseille manager amid links to the Tottenham job.

Roberto De Zerbi is reportedly on the verge of leaving Marseille amid growing links to the Tottenham managerial position.

According to reports in France, the former Brighton boss is nearing the end of his spell at the Ligue 1 club. RMC Sport claim De Zerbi has found it difficult to move past the team’s recent poor run of results, including a heavy 5-0 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday. He is also said to be concerned about what he sees as a lack of commitment within his squad to turn performances around.

Although De Zerbi led training on Tuesday, he reportedly held talks with players to assess whether he still had the support of the dressing room. The report suggests he did not receive the reassurances he was seeking and now believes his time at Marseille is coming to a close.

There were already claims last month that he was considering stepping down following the club’s dramatic Champions League exit, but the latest reports indicate the situation has intensified.

News of his potential departure comes as Thomas Frank edges closer to the exit at Tottenham. A 2-1 home defeat to Newcastle — Spurs’ seventh league loss at home this season — left them just five points above the relegation zone with 12 games remaining.

While Mauricio Pochettino remains the favourite to return to north London, he is currently preparing the United States for a home World Cup, with any availability unlikely before August. De Zerbi has since emerged as the bookmakers’ second choice should Frank be dismissed.

The Italian was previously considered by Spurs in 2023 before Ange Postecoglou’s appointment, though it is understood he failed to fully convince then-chairman Daniel Levy during the interview process.
