Arne Slot fears Wataru Endo has sustained a significant injury during Liverpool’s victory over Sunderland and believes the midfielder could be sidelined for an extended period.
Deployed as a makeshift right-back amid a growing injury list, the 33-year-old appeared to trap his foot in the turf while attempting to clear a dangerous ball into the box. Although he initially tried to continue, he was ultimately unable to do so. The Japan international looked visibly upset as he was stretchered off, with Joe Gomez — recently back from injury — replacing him.
Slot delivers worrying Endo update
Speaking to TNT Sports after the win at the Stadium of Light, Slot provided an update that many Liverpool supporters had feared, while also commending Endo’s resolve to carry on despite clearly being in pain.
The Reds boss said:
“His injury doesn’t look good. Unfortunately, I expect him to be out for quite a long time.
“We’re already dealing with a lot of issues at right-back, but his mentality was outstanding. He stayed on to defend one more set piece. That says everything about him and the team — and it’s one of the reasons we won.”
A harsh blow for Endo
After making his first Premier League start of the season on Wednesday night, it was heartbreaking to see Endo leave the pitch in such discomfort. Slot’s early verdict suggests the midfielder could face a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
Filling in out of position, Liverpool’s No.3 impressed against Sunderland winger Nilson Angulo. According to Sofascore, he won seven of his 12 duels, completed 19 of 22 passes, and contributed seven clearances along with two tackles.
Liverpool’s struggles at right-back this season have been relentless. Conor Bradley remains sidelined for several more months with a serious injury, while Jeremie Frimpong and Gomez have both endured multiple setbacks during the campaign.
Although Gomez has now returned, the prospect of losing Endo for a prolonged period takes some of the shine off an excellent result on Wearside. A clearer timeline on the Japanese midfielder’s recovery is expected in the coming days, and the hope is that the ankle injury proves less severe than initially feared.
