Lewis Steele applauds ‘truly classy’ gesture from Sunderland supporters during Liverpool win.
Lewis Steele commended Sunderland supporters at the Stadium of Light on Wednesday night for what he described as a “really classy” gesture during Liverpool’s victory over the Black Cats.
Virgil van Dijk’s 61st-minute strike secured a 1-0 win for the Reds, making them the first visiting side to triumph on Wearside in the Premier League this season and ending Sunderland’s unbeaten home run in the competition. However, the result was overshadowed by a concerning ankle injury to Wataru Endo.
The Japan international, once again filling in at right-back, was stretchered off after sustaining the knock. Arne Slot later admitted he fears the 33-year-old could be ruled out “for quite a long time.”
Steele applauds Sunderland supporters
Covering the match for the Daily Mail, Steele took to X after the game to praise the reaction of the home crowd as Endo was carried off in visible discomfort.
He wrote: “Thought it was nice that (most) Sunderland fans clapped off Wataru Endo btw. A lot would’ve booed, especially with their team losing 1-0 but #SAFC seem a really classy club. Good manager/team, great stadium, loud fans, terrible weather in your city though, sorry!”
Sunderland also extended their best wishes to Endo on social media, wishing him a speedy recovery following the injury he suffered.
A respectful and appreciated response
As many Liverpool fans are aware, football grounds can at times be marred by distasteful chanting that crosses the line. In contrast, the applause from the majority of Sunderland supporters was a show of genuine respect, acknowledging the seriousness of Endo’s injury.
It stood in stark contrast to the reaction Harvey Elliott received at Elland Road in 2021 after suffering a dislocated ankle. On this occasion, the Wearside faithful demonstrated empathy in a difficult moment — a simple but meaningful act that will surely be valued by Endo and everyone connected with Liverpool.
Unfortunately for the Reds, it appears increasingly likely that the midfielder could join Giovanni Leoni and Conor Bradley in seeing his campaign cut short by injury. The hope now is that all three make a full and swift recovery.
With around 18 months remaining on his contract, Liverpool supporters will be eager to see Endo back in action soon, having represented the club with dedication and professionalism since his move from Stuttgart in 2023.
