Mohamed Salah has drawn level with another Liverpool great, matching Steven Gerrard’s record for the most Premier League assists in the club’s history.
The Egyptian forward registered his 92nd assist in the competition on Wednesday evening, delivering a pinpoint corner that Virgil van Dijk headed home to seal a gritty 1-0 victory over Sunderland at the Stadium of Light. The decisive moment arrived in the 61st minute, finally separating the sides and bringing Salah alongside Gerrard’s long-standing mark.
It represents yet another milestone for the 33-year-old, who has spent the past nine years rewriting the record books at Anfield.
Slot praises Salah’s achievement
Speaking on Match of the Day, Liverpool head coach Arne Slot lauded his star man, highlighting the significance of equalling a record held by such an iconic figure.
“He has so many records for this club, but to share this one with such a great player — both were unbelievable for Liverpool,” Slot said.
When asked whether he expected Salah to surpass Gerrard outright, the Dutchman admitted it feels almost inevitable.
“Unfortunately for Steven, I think Mo will go past him. I don’t expect it — but I certainly hope he does,” Slot added.
Uncertainty over Salah’s future
Despite continuing to make history on the pitch, Salah’s long-term future at Liverpool remains uncertain.
The winger has been strongly linked with a potential summer switch to Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad. Reports indicate that preliminary discussions have already taken place between the club and Salah’s agent, Ramy Abbas, over a possible high-profile move.
