Ange Postecoglou Pulls No Punches in Blunt Verdict on Thomas Frank and Tottenham Following Dismissal
Ange Postecoglou has spoken candidly about Tottenham Hotspur and his successor, Thomas Frank, following the Dane’s dismissal.
Frank was relieved of his duties on Wednesday after Spurs suffered a 2-1 defeat at home to Newcastle — a result that leaves the north London side 16th in the Premier League, just five points above the relegation zone with 12 matches remaining.
It marks the second managerial change at Tottenham in the space of eight months. Postecoglou himself was dismissed only days after guiding the club to victory in the 2025 Europa League final.
His sacking sparked fierce debate among supporters, many of whom felt he deserved another season after delivering European silverware and securing Champions League qualification. Despite finishing 17th in the league, the Australian had been transparent about prioritising the Europa League during the latter part of the campaign.
Appearing on The Overlap’s Stick to Football podcast, Postecoglou offered further insight into the circumstances surrounding his exit. Notably, his appearance came just minutes after Spurs confirmed Frank’s dismissal, prompting an immediate response.
“You know he can’t be the only problem at the club,” Postecoglou said. “That applies to any manager, but ultimately we’re the ones judged on results.
“Tottenham is a curious club. There was a significant shift at the end of last year — not just with me leaving, but Daniel Levy stepping away too.
“That kind of overhaul creates uncertainty. There are no guarantees, regardless of who you appoint. They’ve had elite managers before who didn’t manage to deliver success.
“You have to ask why such a major change was made. Thomas walks in — what exactly is his brief? What is the club’s clear objective?
“At the start of the season, the message was about competing on all fronts. But Spurs haven’t truly done that for quite some time. And when the most influential figure at the club for two decades is also departing, that adds another layer.
“If you’re making such a sweeping reset, you have to expect instability.
“Did Thomas fully understand the situation he was stepping into? I can’t say.
“It’s also a big shift from what I built. I assembled that squad to play a particular way over the last couple of years. Then someone else comes in with a different approach.
“It’s a curious club, Tottenham.”
