Superior to De Zerbi and Pochettino: Spurs prepare major bid to appoint elite-level manager
Tottenham Hotspur are in serious danger in the Premier League, but supporters will hope that the end of Thomas Frank’s dismal spell in charge can finally bring an end to their struggles.
A recent interview from Ange Postecoglou on The Overlap highlighted some of the structural and cultural problems affecting the north London club. While no explosive revelations emerged, it reinforced the sense that deep-rooted issues remain at Tottenham. Change is essential, and the club must get their next managerial appointment right. The leading contenders to replace Frank
Club officials are considering appointing an interim manager until the end of the season. John Heitinga, who was brought in as Frank’s assistant last month, is among those being considered, along with Ryan Mason, recently dismissed by West Bromwich Albion.
Tottenham’s current position is far below expectations. While former boss Mauricio Pochettino and ex-Olympique de Marseille manager Roberto De Zerbi are in contention, another name has emerged that could surpass them both.
Reports from Spain indicate that former FC Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández has become a serious candidate. Some within the club view him as a potential leader for a long-term project. Tottenham are said to be preparing a significant financial proposal to persuade the Spaniard to move to London.
Xavi, 46, has been out of management since leaving Barcelona in 2024, turning down several opportunities since. Although securing his services would require a substantial investment, his progressive and attack-minded philosophy could provide the revival Spurs desperately need. He has previously expressed a desire to manage in England, even stating that he would love to work in the Premier League.
Why Xavi could be the ideal fit
Frank’s tenure faltered partly due to his tactical approach, which did not prioritise possession or expansive attacking football. Tottenham’s “To Dare Is To Do” ethos demands ambition and flair — qualities closely aligned with Xavi’s philosophy.
At Barcelona, his possession-based 4-3-3 system delivered the La Liga title in 2022/23, with his side dominating the ball more than any other team in the division. Across 143 matches in charge, he secured 91 victories, oversaw 280 goals, and maintained a points-per-game average of 2.07.
His emphasis on midfield balance and intelligent attacking play could reshape Tottenham’s structure. Though appointing him would carry an element of risk, Xavi’s credentials are significant. Praised for his “incredible passion” by former teammate Andrés Iniesta, he is regarded as one of Europe’s most promising tactical minds.
Compared to Pochettino, who struggled in his most recent Premier League spell, and De Zerbi, who departed Marseille under difficult circumstances, Xavi brings proven title-winning pedigree. During his time at Camp Nou, Barcelona president Joan Laporta even described him as “the best manager in the world.” Meanwhile, Thierry Henry remarked on CBS Sports that Xavi is “up there with Pep” in terms of football intelligence.
Tactically distinct from Frank, Xavi represents a bold and ambitious direction for Tottenham — one that could restore belief and re-establish the club’s identity in the Premier League.
