Cristian Romero is reportedly “finished” at Tottenham, with expectations growing that he will leave the club.

Cristian Romero has recently drawn attention for his public criticism of the club, and his red card against Manchester United has only deepened concerns at Spurs over his situation.

Former Tottenham scout Mick Brown told Football Insider that Romero’s public remarks have already strained relationships behind the scenes. As a result, Tottenham are reportedly prepared to let him leave at the end of the season, with the defender understood to be open to a move away from North London. Earlier reports on 11 February suggested Romero could push for an exit despite being tied to a long-term contract.

Brown stated on 9 February that Spurs would consider moving the centre-back on in the summer if the public issues continue. He questioned whether Romero sees his long-term future at the club, suggesting his recent comments have damaged important relationships. Criticising decision-makers and the recruitment team publicly, he said, is unlikely to be well received and could influence the club’s stance.

There was interest from both Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid last summer, and if that interest resurfaces, Tottenham may allow him to leave. Brown indicated that such an opportunity would also appeal to Romero, given his recent actions.

Romero’s future is one of several issues Spurs are expected to address in the summer after appointing Igor Tudor on an interim basis to guide the team clear of the relegation zone.

Plans are already underway for a permanent managerial appointment. On 15 February, Football Insider reported that Roberto De Zerbi is under consideration, with his Premier League experience strengthening his candidacy. The Italian recently left Marseille following their Champions League exit but previously impressed during his time at Brighton & Hove Albion and in France. He remains highly regarded, although other candidates are also being assessed.
