Major figure’s time at Tottenham is over – ‘he’s set to leave’
Former Tottenham Hotspur scout Mick Brown has suggested that Cristian Romero’s future in North London is increasingly uncertain following a string of controversial public episodes. Speaking to Football Insider, Brown claimed the Argentine defender has unsettled influential figures at the club with outspoken remarks that have not been well received behind the scenes.
According to Brown, internal patience is starting to run out. Spurs are reportedly becoming more open to the idea of letting the 27-year-old leave at the end of the season. Romero is also believed to be open to a new chapter away from North London, with speculation growing over interest from Spanish heavyweights, including Real Madrid.
Tensions have intensified in recent weeks. Romero drew criticism for publicly questioning the club, and the situation worsened when he was sent off in Tottenham’s loss to Manchester United. That red card heightened concerns among Spurs officials about his temperament and whether he fits the profile of a long-term leader within the squad.
Earlier reports suggested Romero could push for a summer transfer despite being under a lengthy contract. Although Tottenham are not under immediate financial pressure to sell, the club are said to be cautious about retaining a player who appears unsettled and continues to generate negative headlines.
Brown told Football Insider on 9 February that if Romero’s public comments persist, Spurs may seriously weigh up selling him in the next transfer window. Interest would likely be strong, with both Real Madrid and Atlético Madrid having explored a move last summer. Should either club reignite their pursuit, Tottenham could opt to negotiate rather than risk further disruption.
Romero’s uncertain status is just one of several key issues facing the club. After a poor run of results that dragged Spurs into a relegation fight, the hierarchy appointed an interim coach until the end of the campaign. Former Olympique de Marseille manager Igor Tudor has been tasked with stabilising the team on a short-term basis.
Meanwhile, long-term planning is already in motion. Football Insider reported on 15 February that Roberto De Zerbi is a leading candidate to take the role permanently. The Italian coach previously impressed in the Premier League with Brighton & Hove Albion and is widely admired for his progressive tactics and ability to develop players.
De Zerbi most recently led Olympique de Marseille, leaving earlier this month after their Champions League campaign concluded. Despite that exit, he strengthened his reputation in Ligue 1 with attractive football and strong domestic performances.
Although he is not the only option under review, De Zerbi’s experience in England and proven track record make him one of the standout contenders. With uncertainty surrounding both the managerial position and key figures such as Romero, the upcoming summer looks set to be a defining period for Tottenham as they aim to regroup and rebuild.
