Núñez Dropped from Al-Hilal Roster Following Benzema Signing
Darwin Nunez has been left out of Al Hilal SFC’s Saudi Pro League squad following the high-profile arrival of Karim Benzema — a major blow for the former Liverpool striker.
As reported by Chris Burton for GOAL, the 26-year-old Uruguay international has been omitted from the domestic league roster because of foreign player limits, with the Ballon d’Or-winning Frenchman taking up one of the available slots. The report described the move as a ruthless decision, stating that Núñez had been “brutally axed” after Benzema’s arrival.
Squeezed Out by Foreign Player Rules
Al-Hilal are restricted to registering eight overseas players born before 2003 in their 25-man league squad.
Benzema’s switch from Al Ittihad has filled one of those places, leaving no room for Núñez in domestic competition. While he remains eligible for the AFC Champions League, he is now set to spend significant time on the sidelines in league action unless changes are made.
Head coach Simone Inzaghi admitted the call was not easy but pointed to the registration restrictions as decisive, explaining that he personally informed the affected players of the outcome.
A Season of Mixed Returns
Núñez, who departed Liverpool FC last summer in a £46 million deal after helping secure a Premier League title, has endured a campaign of contrasts in Saudi Arabia.
In 16 league appearances, he has scored six goals and provided four assists — respectable numbers at first glance. However, an expected goals tally of 11.48 alongside 14 big chances missed paints a more familiar picture.
The overall contribution is solid, but the efficiency in front of goal remains a concern — an issue that also surfaced during his time at Anfield. His unpredictable style can unsettle defences, but without consistent end product, patience can wear thin.

Having left Merseyside as a league champion with 40 goals in 143 appearances, this latest development marks a sharp change in momentum.
